Herbstausgabe 2013
ist ein Zyklus von fünf Veranstaltungen der Echtzeithalle e.V. in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Musiklabor der Hochschule für Musik und Theater München. Grundlage ist die Interdisziplinarität zwischen Musik, Bildender Kunst, modernem Tanz, experimentellem Video und den (Natur-) Wissenschaften. Für die Herbstausgabe 2013 ist der Schwerpunkt Mathematik als Musik - als expermentelle und Computer- Musik im Zusammenspiel mit klassischen, akustischen Instrumenten (Autorenmusik).

David Rothenberg has long been interested in the musicality of sounds made by inhabitants of the animal world. He has jammed live with lyrebirds, broadcast his clarinet underwater for humpback whales, and covered himself in thirteen-year cicadas to wail away inside a wash of white noise.

In this concert he presents a musical trajectory through several of his favorite species, revealing their distinct and evolved aesthetic senses in an attempt to show that music can reach across species lines, from human to animal, and back.Creatures whose musical worlds we will enter include the thrush nightingale, humpback whale, three-humped treehopper, snowy tree cricket, seventeen-year cicada, white-crested laughing thrush, superb lyrebird, European marsh warbler, lesser water boatman and the mountain pine bark beetle.

Musician and philosopher David Rothenberg is the author of Why Birds Sing (Basic Books and Penguin UK), also published in Italy, Spain, Taiwan, China, Korea, and Germany. In 2006 it was turned into a feature-length TV documentary by the BBC. Rothenberg has also written Sudden Music, Blue Cliff Record, Hand’s End, and Always the Mountains. His articles have appeared in Parabola, Orion, The Nation, Wired, Dwell, Kyoto Journal, The Guardian, The Globe and Mail and Sierra, and his writings have appeared in at least eleven languages. His book Thousand Mile Song (Basic Books), about making music with whales, was turned into a feature documentary for Canal+ in France. His most recent books are Survival of the Beautiful (Bloomsbury)and Bug Music (St Martins Press), which has been profiled on Radiolab, PBS, and in the New Yorker Magazine.
As a musician Rothenberg has performed and recorded with Jan Bang, Scanner, Glen Velez, Karl Berger, Peter Gabriel, Ray Phiri, and the Karnataka College of Percussion. His latest major label music CD, One Dark Night I Left My Silent House, a duet with pianist Marilyn Crispell, came out on ECM in 2010. He is currently at work on a CD with Pauline Oliveros. Rothenberg is professor of philosophy and music at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, currently on sabbatical for one year and living in Berlin.

Als Künstler und Naturwissenschaftler haben wir noch einen weiteren Zugang zur Natur: Nicht nur die sichtbare Natur, die Landschaften, die Tiere, die Pflanzen, der Himmel, das Wasser, der Wind faszinieren uns, sondern auch die unsichtbare Natur, ihre Gesetze, ihre Formen-Sprache bis hin zur Mathematik (der Natur). Diese Mathematik geht in unsere Musik ein als gestaltendes Material. Die Klänge und Geräusche der Natur und der Dinge sind wunderbar zu hören und können in der Musik nachgebildet und neu geformt werden. Wir lernen aber auch die inneren Geheimnisse der Natur hörbar zu machen, ihre innere Gestalt, ihre inneren Prozesse. Innen heißt nicht nur die Moleküle, die Atome, die Elementarteilchen, sondern auch die Gesetze des Kosmos. Das ist eigentlich ein uralter Gedanke - mindestens seit Pythagoras und den schöpferischen Menschen anderer Kulturen.
In der Musik des Autorenensembles an diesem Abend werden wir Tonfolgen einsetzen, die zum Teil außermusikalisch erscheinen, wohl aber wunderliche Stimmungen erzeugen. Es ist unter anderem die bekannte Fibonacci-Reihe, die wir in ein oder zwei hörbare Oktaven zurückrechnen und spielen - gleichzeitig als Zeit-Marken und Zeit-Abstände.

The speech of nature - a musical-mathematical approach
To be an artist and at the same time a scientist is a further way to interpret nature: not only the visible nature, the landscapes, the animals, the plants, the sky, the water, the wind… which fascinate us, but also the invisible nature, its principles, the speech of its structures - up to the mathematics of nature. These mathematics are constructing our music. The sounds and features of nature are marvelous to hear and can be rebuilt in music. We also learn to discover the secrets of nature by doing its music, its inner architecture, its inner processes. Inside refers not only to the molecules, atoms, elementary particles, but also to the principles of the cosmos. That is in fact a very old thinking - at least since Pythagoras and other creative thinkers of other cultures.
The music of the "Autoren-Ensemble" in this evening will take strings of pitches that seem to come from outside of (normal) music, but create marvelous moods. For instance, the well-known Fibonacci series, which we bring in one or two audible octaves, or the play of tempic systems following the Fibonacci numbers.
